Design & Story
Teochew Png Kueh is a traditional savoury rice dumpling, recognised by its soft pink colour and peach shaped mould, an auspicious form associated with longevity and good health.
As Teochew people moved from coastal villages to different parts of the world, recipes like Png Kueh travelled with them. The ingredients changed, kitchens changed, countries changed, but some foods stayed the same. The same moulds, the same shapes, the same dishes appearing in different cities and different homes.
You might not even speak the language fluently anymore, but sometimes all it takes is seeing a Png Kueh to recognise your own people.
The phrase “If You Know, You Know” sits beside the illustration as a nod to ga gi nang. Not everyone will understand it. But the ones who do, will know immediately.
Part of the Acquired Taste collection, a series about food, memory and the things we carry with us, no matter where we end up.
