Ah-Ma’s Chinese Knot Heritage Tee

This piece is inspired by pankou, traditional Chinese decorative fastenings also known as Chinese knot buttons. Handcrafted through intricate loops and knots, they represent patience, craftsmanship and cultural detail. The curved placement of the front design is inspired by the soft neckline lines of a traditional cheongsam, creating a gentle, feminine flow across the chest.

The artwork is illustrated in vivid blue on white, drawing from the visual language of traditional Chinese blue and white porcelain. The detailing reflects balance, precision and care, and speaks to skills learned, shared and rediscovered over time.

The back artwork features a circular crest with a central peony, a symbol of prosperity, strength and enduring beauty. Flowing cloud forms and geometric motifs inspired by traditional architecture and textile patterns bring the design together into a modern crest that feels both refined and expressive. Designed to sit across the back, the artwork adds movement and depth to the silhouette, like a wearable emblem that honours cultural detail while fitting naturally into everyday wear.

This design is a personal one. My Ah-ma (grandmother) was a talented seamstress who handmade these buttons. She once tried to teach me when I was little, but I never quite held onto the technique. This design honours what is passed down, what is remembered, and what continues to live on through memory.
